What To Do When Your Car Window Is Broken?

It’s a real pain in the neck when you walk out of a convenience store, arms full of groceries, then head back to the parking lot to find that one or more of your car’s windows is broken.

Maybe a dump truck carrying gravels carelessly sped by, and some of the little stones flew off to leave some nasty cracks on your window.

Worse still, maybe someone broke into your car and made off with the loose change you left behind.

The most important thing to do is to remain calm. Don’t panic, and don’t try to take your anger out on something. The last thing you want to do is get in even more trouble.

So what’s next?

Once you’ve calmed down, the first thing you want to do is try to assess the damage. Depending on how severely hit your windows are, it might still be possible to have them repaired, rather than replaced.

Some points to tell whether repair is preferable to replacement:

1) The crack or chipping is smaller than a loonie.
2) The damage isn’t sitting in the driver’s field of vision. If it is, that can seriously impair your view, and be a hazard to both you and other drivers.
3) The damage is restricted to the outer layer of glass.
4) The damage is at least 5 cm away from the visible edge of your windshield.

If the damage to your window or windshield matches all of this, then it might still be possible to repair it. Make sure to consult with your repair shop to see if that is the case. A specialist’s opinion is invaluable.

Once you’ve assessed the damage, check with your auto insurance to see how much of this they can cover.

If it was a break-in, start instead by filing a police report. If you’re lucky, they can send someone over to check it out. If you’re not, you might have to head to your nearest police station to file the report.

A police report is essential to file an insurance claim in the event of a break-in. If it was just some damage, then skip on straight to checking with your insurance company.
