Your windshield is one of the most practical structural components of your car. Its placement, however, leaves it particularly vulnerable to damage from multiple sources. Knowing the most common causes of windshield chirps can help you better mitigate the risk of damage.

1. Loose gravel

The most common cause of windshield chirps is loose gravel hitting the windshield. Loose gravel is found on road surfaces that use chip sealing for resurfacing, whereby a thin layer of asphalt is laid over the road, and then tiny pieces of crushed rock – aggregate – are embedded into the asphalt.

Every day wear and tear and weather fluctuations can also cause rocks and gravel in all types of road surfaces to loosen up over time. When these rocks attach themselves to the tires of fast moving cars, they can be hurled back into oncoming traffic, causing a windshield chip.

So, it is best to maintain a safe distance from big vehicles since their tires can hurl more gravel, increasing the risk of windshield damage.

2. Extreme weather conditions

It is common knowledge that severe weather conditions can cause serious damage to anything it gets in contact with, including your windshield. Extreme elements like hail or the gusty winds associated with hurricanes, tornadoes, or even standard cyclones can stir-up debris that causes damage to your windshield. There is also the risk of trees or branches crashing into your windshield during heavy downpour or storms.

3. Vehicle cargo debris

Aside from rocks on the road surface, different kinds of small items can fly off the back of vehicles – both private and commercial – as they move down the road. Any cargo that is not properly secured and covered can become a flying projectile if it loosens during transit, damaging the windshield of any vehicle that is following too closely. Even if the item lands harmlessly on the road, another vehicle can drive over it, sending it toward your windshield.

Do you have a chip in your windshield? Whether you have a small crack or a large split in your glass, the experienced technicians at City Collision can evaluate your situation, get it fixed, and have you back on the road in no time.
