Whenever a hailstorm hits, it can cause hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of property damage. As Edmonton is part of Hailstorm Alley, it is a regular victim of these destructive acts of nature when the summer rolls in.

One of the worst things that could be included in these huge nine figure losses is your own car. Even a minute under hail could potentially put your vehicle out of commission, sometimes for good. So what can you do to protect your car from the ravages of hail?
Here are four tips that can help with that problem.

Get covered parking.

A wise man once said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It might cost you a bit to set up a garage or even a sturdy roof over your car, but this is well worth the investment. Covered parking not only protects against hail, but also against snow and sleet. If getting covered parking is out of the question, see if you can find cover near your house for emergencies, like the garage next door, if its owner will allow it.

Keep track of any cover.

If you happen to be on the road and away from the safety of your garage, then it’s best to have your phone keep track of any cover along your route. It could be anything from mall parking to beneath an overpass, so long as it protects your car. Trees don’t count!

Use portable protection.

You can always have your own protection handily available for when the occasion strikes. Many companies offer effective car covers, including hail shields that are basically air bags that you can cover your car with. If you haven’t gotten one yet, a good substitute for when you’re in a pinch is to duct tape blankets to your car. The more layers you can get on there, the better. In a worst case scenario, the floor mats can be used, though because of the limited coverage, it would be best to prioritize the windshield. Just make sure to get in cover yourself once you’re done putting these things on!

Stay on guard.

Above all else, be prepared. Keep yourself abreast of the latest forecasts. Following Environment Canada on Twitter or Facebook should keep you updated. Also, getting comprehensive insurance for your car will make sure to keep you covered, in case the worst happens.
