Recent statistics show that close to 3,600 children below the age of 19 years receive treatment for car accident-related injuries in emergency rooms across North America. Auto accident injuries can cause you pain and suffering, but it can be more agonizing to watch a child suffer, especially if you did not take the right precautions to ensure their safety on the road.

These tips can help you better protect your children in the event of an auto collision:

1. Drive defensively

While you should always be careful and watchful on the road, you should be more cautious when driving with your kids to keep your family protected. Driving defensively is the best way to reduce the risk of being involved in an accident, and keep your family as safe as they can be.

2. Use car seats and booster seats

Compared to adults, children are at greater risk of sustaining serious injuries in car accidents, and can even be killed in collisions that would normally not injure an adult passenger. Statistics show that the proper use of car seats reduces the risk of injury and death by 71 percent for infants, and 54 percent for toddlers. Booster seats also reduce the risk of severe injuries in children between the ages of 4 and 8 years, compared to only using a seat belt.

Additional safety tips involving child and booster seats include:

• Use rear-facing car seats for infants weighing less than 20 pounds

• Use a forward-facing seat for children over one year old and weighing 20 to 40 pounds

• Use a booster seat for children aged 4 to 8 years and weighing 40 to 80 pounds

• Restrain children over 80 pounds with a seat belt whenever the car is moving

• Don’t let children below the age of 12 years ride in the front seat (even when using a car seat)

Finally, if your children have outgrown booster seats, and are taller than 57 inches, the next safest implementation when driving is the seat belt. Ensure that everyone buckles up, as seat belts are known to reduce the risk of serious injury and death by up to 50 percent.
